These are some details from a Paul Gurling, who lives in Salisbury. " It
would appear that John Fisher Gurling who is buried in Tibenham churchyard was
married to Mary Ann Robertson from North Elmham and must have died soon after
his son was conceived . According to the 1841 census for Tibenham John Gurling
is living with his future parents in law , Thomas and Ann Robertson in Diss
Road. By 1851 only his widow Mary Ann Gurling and a four year old son John
Fisher Gurling is living in the Robertson household with the old couple. The 1861
cencus details for Tibenham are missing, by 1871 John Gurling now 24 is married
to Sarah Betts, daughter of Edward Wiseman Betts, also buried to John Fisher
Gurling in Tibenham Churchyard, is still living in Diss Road with his family
which includes his widowed grandfather Thomas, now aged 87. My grandfather
Charles Edward appears as a 3 year old in the 1881 census, having been born the
fourth child of John and Sarah."
Paul Gurling, also sent me years ago, a copy of the Catalogue for Bankruptcy
re John Fisher Gurling, sold at auction by Thomas Gaze of Diss on Tuesday 24
January 1888. Paul goes on to say "the thought occurred to me that he might
have committed suicide after going bankrupt and died......this could be the
reason why he is not buried in Tibenham churchyard alongside his father. I never
heard any rumours about a family suicide but it wouldn't be something that they
would want to talk about, and this may be the reason other family members
dispersed around that time to various places, such as Dorset, Hull etc."
